Shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 6, state police were dispatched to I-87, near Exit 18 (New Paltz), when 35-year-old Robert J. Arciola reportedly lost control of his Honda, running himself off the roadway and into a muddy ditch.

According to police, during the subsequent investigation into the incident, troopers determined that Arciola was driving while impaired on drugs, and in possession of heroin and marijuana. He was placed in custody and evaluated by a Drug Recognition Expert. He then submitted to a urine sample to determine the drug content in his system.

Arciola was ultimately charged with a felony count of fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, as well as misdemeanor counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and driving while impaired by drugs. Arciola was also levied with multiple violations. He was arraigned in the Town of New Paltz Court and has been remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond.
