Ossining Bicyclist Killed In Briarcliff Manor

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. – An Ossining woman was fatally injured Sunday in Briarcliff Manor when “an inattentive driver” hit her bicycle while she was crossing an intersection, Police Chief Norman Campion said.

Jane Shakman, 62, was riding her bicycle west along Chappaqua Road at around 12:40 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by a 2003 Honda at the intersection of Chappaqua Road and Tappan Terrace, according to Campion. The Honda was driven by 26-year-old Briarcliff Manor resident Valerie Naber, Campion said Tuesday morning.

“As [Shakman] got to that intersection, an inattentive driver made a left turn trying to go onto Tappan Terrace and struck Ms. Shakman,” Campion said. “It’s difficult to say more without an autopsy report.”

An autopsy is expected later Tuesday at the Westchester County Medical Examiner’s Office, Campion said. Shakman died Monday morning at Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, police said. Naber was charged with operating a vehicle while having a suspended license, not having a license on her and driving an uninspected vehicle, Campion said.

“We’re looking into more serious charges pending the results of that autopsy,” Campion said. “This is still a very active ongoing investigation.”

Campion added that the Briarcliff Manor Police Department is cooperating with the Westchester County District Attorney’s Office in the investigation.
