Romell Tukes, 24, was arrested on the 1200 block of Crompond Rd. and charged with assault in the first degree, robbery, criminal possession and use of a firearm, Police Chief Eric Johansen said. Police recovered the .38 caliber handgun used in the shooting.

A man and a woman in their 20s were sitting in a parked car on the 700 block of South St. when they were each struck by a bullet at 2 a.m., the woman in the shoulder and the man in his left hand, Johansen said.

The two drove to Hudson Valley Hospital Center in Cortlandt, while officers established a crime scene, Johansen said. Their injuries were not said to be life threatening.

Police said robbery was the motive and Tukes knew the victims. Johansen said the attack was not random.

"I want to commend their officers for their professionalism and quick work," Johansen said. "They were able to arrest a violent felon and remove him the streets. Hopefully he will land in jail for a significant period of time."

According to LoHud, Tukes was paroled from state prison in May where he served 18 months on a felony drug charge after being arrested at the Crossroads Apartment Building in Peekskill.
