The crash occurred around 10:20 p.m. when a 2000 Saturn SL, operated by Joseph C. Licurse of LaGrange traveling northbound exited the roadway for an unknown reason and struck an earth embankment, said Trooper Melissa McMorris.

According to McMorris, the Saturn overturned and came to rest, blocking both northbound lanes.

Another northbound vehicle, driven by 28-year-old Ray C. Butler of Mohegan Lake, subsequently struck Licurse’s vehicle on the driver’s side, McMorris said.

Licurse was extricated from the vehicle by Putnam Valley Fire Department and transported to Westchester Medical Center via helicopter. He is currently listed in critical condition, McMorris said.

Butler was transported to Westchester Medical Center via ambulance with non-life threatening injuries, she added.

The crash remains under investigation.

The State Police asks anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation in Cortlandt by calling (914) 769-2600.
