OSSINING, N.Y. – Sister Margaret Rose Winkelmann, a Maryknoll missioner living in Ossining, died Jan. 8 at Maryknoll Sisters Residential Care. She was 96.

A Maryknoll Sister for more than 70 years, Winkelmann was taught in Tanzania for many years.

Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Jefferson City, Mo., she was the daughter of William F. and Anna M. Kemna Winkelmann. Raised in Our Lady of Sorrows Parish of the Archdiocese of St. Louis, she graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Quincy, Ill., in 1934.

Winkelmann entered Maryknoll in Ossining on Sept. 6, 1942, and graduated from Maryknoll Teachers College in 1948. She was among the first Maryknoll Sisters to serve in Tanzania.

She lived there from 1948 to 1992, helping to found three schools: Kowak Primary School, Marian Girls Secondary School and Rosary Girls Secondary School. She also helped establish Immaculate Heart Sisters of Africa, a local religious community for women.

Winkelmann served as a local and regional superior for Maryknoll Sisters in East Africa from 1954 to 1969.

After returning to the U.S., she served in the Maryknoll Sisters’ development department from 1992 to 2004. She worked in direct mail and with major donors at Maryknoll, N.Y., before retiring and becoming part of Eden Community at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining.

A Vesper service will be held for at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday at Annunciation Chapel at the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the chapel. Burial will be at Maryknoll Sisters Cemetery in Maryknoll. Dorsey Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
