OSSINING, N.Y. -- Phillip Gerard Spengeman, a former Ossining resident and now a New Orleans resident passed away suddenly on Sunday, Aug. 3, at Chateau De Notre Dame. He was 69.
Spengeman was born in Indianapolis, Ind., on June 26 1945, to Walter Gerard Spengeman and Christel Louis Spengemen. He grew up in Ossining and graduated from Scarborough School. He continued onto Ohio Wesleyan College and New York University where he received a bachelor's degree in Sociology. He was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. Spengeman worked with the Louisana State Department of Job Labor Service from the early 1980s until his retirement in 2011. He was instrumental in assisting the survivors of Hurricane Katrina in 2008. One of his favorite assignments was at the 1984 Louisana World Exposition. He was an avid runner, running in more than 32 local races over the years. He completed the Mardi Gras marathon in 2004. He also loved singing and sang with both the Symphony Chorus of New Orleans and the St. Andrew's Episcopal Church Choir. He was actively involved with the St. Andrew's congregation and served in many administrative capacities in the church Spengeman is survived by his daughter Marisa Elizabeth Spengeman, his sister Christel Gorman and her husband Keith Gorman of Bow, N.H., his brother Peter Spengeman and his wife Paula Spengeman of Verplanack, N.Y., as well as several nieces and nephews.
Spengeman was predeceased by a sister Gail Elaine Spengeman. A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on Carrolton Avenue in New Orleans on Friday, Aug. 15. Burial will take place in St. Andrew Episcopal Church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church.
