Martha Lillian McCandless, 80, Former Briarcliff Resident

BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. -- Martha Lillian McCandless (“Marty”), formerly of Briarcliff Manor, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Bridgeport, Conn. She was 80.

McCandless was born March 20, 1935, to Rudolph Bohn and Alice (Loland) Bohn in Brooklyn. She graduated from Sewanhaka Central High School in Floral Park, N.Y.

She and Roy McCandless married on June 25, 1955, and moved to Briarcliff Manor, where Roy graduated from The King’s College and where he worked and Marty lived, worked, volunteered and raised their family for over 38 years. She served as “Miss Marty,” running the Tiny Tots program at the college’s Royal Rock Day Camp from 1968 to its close in the late 1980s.

From 1976-88, she also ran The Little School in Briarcliff at Faith Lutheran Church.

The King’s College was the center of the McCandless family’s social life where Marty, Roy and their children lived in “The Castle” from 1970-87. Marty and Roy served as dorm parents for hundreds of men who lived upstairs.

After King’s, she and Roy enjoyed seven years as caretakers at the Women’s Club in White Plains, N.Y. They then moved south to Jacksonville, N.C., from 1993 to 2007. In 2007, they moved to Monroe, Conn.

Marty was mother to three children and their spouses, and grandmother to eight grandchildren – Bonnie Ramsey and her daughter Brittany and husband Roman, and son Matthew of Fredericksburg, Va., Dan and Marjie McCandless and their children Kate and Jack of Monroe, Conn., and Roy and Sue McCandless and their children Caleb and his wife Heather, Amos, Abby, and Lily of Concord, N.H.

In addition to her husband, she is also survived by her youngest brother Ed, of West Palm Beach, Fla. 

A service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. at the Black Rock Congregational Church, 3685 Black Rock Turnpike, Fairfield, Conn.. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests making a gift in her honor to The Little School, Faith Lutheran Brethren Church, 480 Pleasantville Rd, Briarcliff Manor, NY 10510.
