Lou Panzanaro Sr., Staple In Peekskill Community, Dies At 101

Louis W. Panzanaro, Sr. a lifelong resident of Peekskill who was a staple in the community, died on Wednesday, Nov. 23, just shy of his 102nd birthday.

Panzanaro worked for the NY Central Railroad in Croton Harmon and for the Peekskill Recreation Department in their basketball program where he is fondly remembered by many. He served honorably in the US Army during World War II.

He was born on Dec. 6, 1914 in Peekskill to Ettore and Nora Fitzgerald Panzanaro. He married Regina E. Hayes on May 12, 1945 at the Assumption Church. Locally, he was a Life Member of the Cortlandt Hook & Ladder, Columbian Hose #1, and the Knights of Columbus, Lodge 462.

He is survived by a son, Louis W. (Eleonora) Panzanaro, Jr. of New Windsor, the longtime coach of the Peekskill High School varsity boys basketball team, and three daughters; Kathleen (Raymond) Berry of Chester, Jeannie (Dominick) Cianci of Montrose and Ginger (Frank) Dandreano of Fishkill.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, a sister, Gloria DeMeo, sister-in-law, Barbara Panzanaro, and brother-in-law, Pat (Joanne) Hayes, along with many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his wife, Regina, grandson, Louis Panzanaro, III, a brother, Ettore Panzanaro, a sister, Nora Rodgers and a great-great grandson, Carter Pollard.

Visitation is Sunday, Nov. 27 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Joseph F. Nardone Funeral Home, Peekskill. Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, Nov. 28, 10 a.m. at the Assumption Church. Interment will follow at Assumption Cemetery. In his memory, in lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the LWP III Scholarship Fund, 1480 Riverview Ave., Peekskill, NY 10566.
