John Creary, 88, Ossining Resident

OSSINING, N.Y. – John Creary, longtime Ossining resident, died Sunday, Jan. 10 at Rosary Hill Home, Hawthorne. He was 88.

His parents, Herman Beresford and Ivy Elicia (Satchell) Creary, named him Herman John Oct. 28, 1927, in Kingston, Jamaica - West Indies.

He was educated in Montclair, N.J. and Kingston, graduating from St. George's College in 1945. He earned his bachelor’s degree in foreign language and philosophy from Fordham University in 1952 and a master’s degree and professional diploma at the Teachers College at Columbia University.

He married Audrey Roberts Aug. 8, 1953, at Resurrection Church in New York City. He also rose to the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force from 1953-58 in active duty and 1958-66 in the reserves. For more than 30 years as a language teacher, Creary enlightened secondary school students in New York City and Bedford and, for a short period after retiring in 1986, at Cardinal Hayes High School and Archbishop Stepinac High School.

He was a parishioner at St. Augustine Church, Ossining. He sang with the St. Augustine Choir and the Old Mill singers. An avid marathoner, he completed more than 20 marathons.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Audrey; his children Marianne O'Loughlin; Kenneth, and his wife, Lauren; Joseph and his wife, Christine; Martin and his wife, Therese; Eve; Rose Sharp and her husband, David; Nicholas; Regina Molinelli and her husband, Michael; and Christin; brothers, Peter, Xavier, Paul and Harold; 17 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He was predeceased by his son, Michael Christian.

Calling hours are from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday at Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 W. Stevens Ave., Hawthorne. A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at St. Augustine Church, 381 N. Highland Ave., Ossining. Interment will take place at Long Island National Cemetery.
