Dora Calabro, 97, Ossining

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Dora Calabro, an Ossining native, died last week at the age of 97.

Calabro was born in Italy and immigrated to Ellis Island when she was nine, settling with her family in Ossining in 1929. 

Calabro learned to knit and made many of the garments she wore as The family struggled through The Great Depression.During World War II, Calabro did her part by working as a nurse’s aide. Her passion for and dedication to this job earned her a special citation from President Harry Truman. 

Calabro married her husband, Joe, in 1946. Calabro worked and maintained a business in her home making meatballs and sauce. She sold her food products to grocery stores, but when the business grew too big, she sold it, as the family moved to Tulsa.

Calabro is survived by her daughters, Linda and Suzanne, her son, Joseph Calabro, six grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Great grandchildren; Isabella, Charlotte, Madeline, Kain, Kash, Jude, Dora Marie, Hugh Joseph, Brayden, Michael Anthony, Lucien She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and two brothers, Fulvio “Foo” Traditi, and Donato Traditi.

Funeral Mass was held Wednesday at St. Henry’s Catholic Church in Owasso Oklahoma with Father Matt LaChance officiating.
