WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- In Westchester, the question, "Where am I?" does not always have the easiest response.
While Westchester officially has 43 municipalities, the county is a mix of cities, towns, villages, hamlets and census designated places.
Everyone in New York State lives in a city, town or Indian reservation.
A city has a mayor and is incorporated as a city within its charter. There are no villages in cities.
Towns are governed by supervisors and villages are located within towns. Towns also are eligible to set up taxing districts within the town. Scarsdale, Mount Kisco and Harrison have their entire villages within the town.
Villages are municipalities that provide services to their residents.
Westchester is home to the City of Rye, Town of Rye and Village of Rye Brook. Rye Brook is in the Town of Rye.
The Village of Ossining is inside the Town of Ossining. The Town of Pelham contains the Village of Pelham and Pelham Manor.

The villages of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown may share many of the same services, but they are in two different towns. Sleepy Hollow is in the Town of Mount Pleasant while Tarrytown is in the Town of Greenburgh, like neighboring Irvington.
Boundaries are not always clearly drawn in Westchester. Goldens Bridge is in Lewisboro, not Somers.
The county's largest park, the 4,315-acre Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, is located in Pound Ridge, but its entrance is actually in Cross River, a small hamlet in the Town of Lewisboro that includes John Jay High School and the Orchard Square Shopping Center.
Sarah Lawrence College is in Yonkers though it shares a post office and zip code with Bronxville.
The Westchester Country Club is in both Rye and Harrison.
Many businesses on Central Park Avenue like to claim they are in Scarsdale, even though they are either in Greenburgh or Yonkers.
