The free spay and neuter surgeries for feral cats will be on Monday’s, Wednesday’s and Friday’s in March and April 2015.

The specific dates are March 23, 25, 27, 30 and April 1, and 3. The cost of the surgeries will be underwritten by a grant from the Bernice Barbour Foundation, which also funded the program in 2014.

“The SPCA of Westchester has provided a free feral spay and neuter week for the last ten years in an effort to lessen the feral cat population in Westchester, as well as to save lives and eliminate unnecessary suffering,” said Shannon Laukhuf, SPCA executive director.

“This year we will be offering free surgeries three days a week for two weeks in lieu of a week-long program, which seems better suited to those who trap feral cats.” The shelter has openings available during this special program for TNR (Trap/Neuter/Return) participants who do not regularly use the Simpson Clinic’s spay and neuter services for feral cats. Anyone interested in taking advantage of this free program is urged to contact the Simpson Clinic at 914-941-2896, ext. 20, to make an appointment and receive further instructions. All feral cats must be transported in a trap. In addition to the surgery, the cats will receive a rabies vaccination and have their ears tipped, a painless procedure that identifies them as having been altered.

The SPCA of Westchester’s normal schedule for feral cat spay and neuter surgery is every Monday for a low-cost fee. The SPCA altered 683 feral cats in 2014.

The SPCA of Westchester is in Briarcliff Manor and is a no-kill shelter. The SPCA is not affiliated with the ASPCA. The website is www.spca914.org.
