An auction of foreclosed properties to be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 14, at the Ossining Town/Village Municipal Building,16 Croton Ave. in Ossining. The town "rarely takes properties, because the Town Tax Office assiduously assists taxpayers in getting all delinquent taxes paid before the town takes a Judgment of Foreclosure," Ossining representatives said in a news release.
Town Receiver of Taxes Gloria Fried said that in her 12 years in office she has had only two prior auctions and that no other property other than those being auctioned have delinquent taxes prior to 2011, according to a news release from the town.
"So many times I am asked if the Town has any properties to auction, and for the last seven years, the answer has been 'No,'" Fried said in an emailed statement. "But sometimes, people just walk away."
Only qualified bidders can participate in the auction. In order to qualify, potential bidders must sign the town's conditions of sale, sign and complete an application form and present them to the tax office with a certified bank check for $2,500 that will be held in escrow, according to the town's release. Winning bidders must then pay the balance of their bid within 45 days, while unsuccessful bidders will receive their checks back as soon as the bidding ends. More than 35 people applied and qualified to bid on the last auction seven years ago.
People interested in the property at 94 State St. may tour the premises at an "open house" from 3 to 5 p.m. on Aug. 7. The property is a three-bedroom home, with a walk-up attic and full basement and the opening bid is $49,000, according to the town.
The vacant land offered consists of two lots on Priestly Street, a paper street off Agate Avenue in the Village of Ossining. The lots may be viewed at any time and will be sold together at an opening bid of $28,000, according to the town.
