Top Stories 2012: Sandy Hits Ossining

OSSINING, N.Y. – Hurricane Sandy swept through Ossining in late October, leaving more than half of all Ossining customers without power, dozens of roadways blocked and boats washed up onto the shore and onto the tracks at the Ossining Train Station.

More than 6,000 customers in Ossining were without power for at least a day after the hurricane hit the area, but there were no major injuries or accidents reported in the village or town. Dozens of downed trees and wires led to numerous road closures in the days following the hurricane, but thousands more remained without power for nearly two weeks.

Not even 10 days had passed following Hurricane Sandy’s devastation when Ossining officials had to gear up for the Nor’easter that swept through in early November, but local officials said the damage could have been much worse.

Despite the two storms causing thousands of residents to lose power, dozens of trees to fall, several motor vehicle accidents and flooding in the Ossining School District and along the waterfront, officials in the town and village of Ossining are thankful that there were no major injuries or deaths in Ossining.

The Ossining Boathouse on the riverfront endured several feet of flooding, but opened in early December. Village and town officials said in December they were still working to estimate the damage caused to the area but said it was likely the effects would be felt for months to come.
