Students Petition for Safety Zone in Ossining

OSSINING, N.Y. - Two fifth grade students were successful in petitioning the Ossining School District to receive bus transportation for safety reasons.

The students, who were not identiified, reside below the minimum distance required by the district to qualify for bus transportation but a consultant with Transportation Advisory Services retained by the district determined a hazardous zone did exist within a portion of the area where the students reside.

As a result, the Board of Education last week adopted a child safety zone along Underhill Road, approximately 900 feet southwest of the intersection with Pleasantville Road, which will continue southwest to Oak Hill Terrace.

In making its decision, the board considered the nonexistence of sidewalks and walkways, the width of the roadways, the volume and average speed of traffic, density of population, and complete lack of traffic safety features and patrols.

There will be no added expense to the district to add the two students to the bus route.
