An online petition, which calls for Trader Joe's to move into the location, has garnered 821 signatures since it was posted on Wednesday.
The petition notes that Millwood already has several high-quality local businesses, ranging from Drug Mart to Rocky's Millwood Deli.
"People from all over come to Millwood for these great places."
The space is located in Millwood Plaza, a shopping center that is at the intersection of Route 100 and Station Place.
If the initiative is successful, it would mark the grocer's first foray into northern Westchester. Trader Joe's currently has three locations in southern Westchester, with the near one being in Hartsdale.
A related Facebook page for the effort now has more than 800 members.
New Castle Supervisor Rob Greenstein has offered his own support for the idea, sending out an announcement about it with a statement.
"Residents have made it very clear to me that they would like to see a Trader Joe’s in the Millwood Plaza. It looks like they are making it very clear on Facebook as well."
Greenstein added that he would like to meet with officials from Trader Joe's and share data about traffic and how Millwood Plaza draws in business from neighboring towns.
Acme Markets was originally the bidder for the Millwood store when A&P filed for bankruptcy in July. The store was one of four in Westchester County that was removed from its bidding cluster earlier this month; Acme ultimately won a judge's approval to buy 70 locations, down from its initial bid package of 76.
The store will be auctioned to the highest bidder, Greenstein told Daily Voice.
"We are now at the mercy of the high bidder," he wrote, before noting the effort to convince supermarkets, including Trader Joe's, to make bids.
