OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining Daily Voice has been counting down to the new year by listing, in no particular order, the top stories from 2012. Here is the list:

  • Hurricane Sandy struck Ossining on Oct. 29 and caused thousands of residents to lose power, flooded several streets and caused thousands of dollars in damage around the town and village.
  • Intel awarded Ossining High School its Star Innovator Award, a national honor given to the one high school deemed to have the top science and math program in the country.
  • Ossining police stopped a "Project X" party at the old Brandreth Pill Factory using social media. Reports indicated that as many as 4,000 teens were set to attend the party before police found out.
  • The Town of Ossining's proposition to change the highway superintendent position from elected to appointed failed in an election, and current Superintendent Michael G. O'Connor is suing the Town Board.
  • Ossining cyclist Jane Shakman was killed while riding her bike in Briarcliff Manor. Her family donated a bench in her name to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Westchester.
  • A fox was captured and released after it reportedly attacked a woman in Ossining. The fox was freed after state officials said the village lacked a permit for the animal's capture.
  • Ossining resident Bryan Johnson drowned on June 20 after a prank gone wrong on a trip to Orchard Beach.
  • Two eighth-graders at Dorner Middle School were charged with juvenile delinquency in April after one of them allegedly attempted to force a boy to perform oral sex in a school bathroom while the other one blocked the door, police said.
  • Gas prices strained Ossining residents and businesses in 2012 after prices crept up to $4 a gallon on at least three occasions during the year. 
  • Three junior varsity Sleepy Hollow football players were taken to Phelps Memorial Hospital Center in October after they were reportedly assaulted in Ossining after a football game with rival Ossining High School.
