Ossining Resident To Talk About Lincoln Assassination

YONKERS N.Y. -- Yonkers residents are invited to a discussion about the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln and its devastating aftermath on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Will Branch of the Yonkers Public Library

Ossining resident John Muranelli, 59, will lead the program titled, "Now He Belongs To The Ages - President Dies at Assassin's Hand April 14, 1865."

Muranelli will detail the events leading up to the shooting by American stage actor John Wilkes Booth. He will also talk about the trial of the various conspirators, and talk about legislation that came as a result of the assassination.

Muranelli's interest in Lincoln's assassination came from a library visit in 1977 where the sports section wasn't entertaining, he said.

"Back then I didn't know Lincoln from a hole in the wall," said Muranelli. "Then while browsing, this biography on Lincoln caught my eye, and I read it nonstop. It really drew me into the drama of the shooting, and how things really changed because of it. I have a regular job, but this has really become my passion. It's a pretty amazing story, and if I can just make one person interested then I'm happy with it."

The discussion will last an hour, and will include a half hour question and answer period afterwards. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 914-337-1500.
