OSSINING, N.Y. Westchester Magazine recently named Ossining as the Best Place for Architecture Admirers in Westchester.
The article highlights the villages Downtown Historic District, Moorehaven and even modern buildings like the Ossining Public Library . Writer Dave Donelson praises Ossining for offering buildings from every era and style. In the article , Donelson notes the villages 270-plus year history, with some structures dating back to the early 17th-century arrival of the Dutch.
Architecture aficionados wont find any place in the county much better for looking and learning than the Village of Ossining, Donelson wrote. You can also count on them being there in the future large swaths of Ossining have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The article is putting something down in writing that Ossining Historical Society Museum Curator Norman MacDonald said hes felt in his heart for years.
We do have some very interesting buildings that have been able to survive for more than 150 years and its been combined with new buildings that have fit really well with that earlier style, MacDonald said. There have been many people in our past that have worked very hard to make sure that style is something that lasts and that those historical buildings are kept in place.
MacDonald, a previous Ossining Historical Society president and 35-year member, said there are too many buildings in the town and village for him to name a favorite.
I guess my favorites, because I cant say just one, would be some of the old residential buildings that date back to the 1700s, MacDonald said. A good example is Moorehaven because its a very unique structure and its pre-Revolutionary War, and thats something you dont find in as great of a condition.
Ossining Architect Emil Bandriwsky agreed that Ossining had the most interesting architecture in Westchester.
There are lot of historical sites and a lot of variety to the architecture in the village, Bandriwsky said. But theres certainly great architecture throughout the town and the village because there are so many historical sites around that really stand out.
