OSSINING, N.Y. -- Archie, the beloved comic book character, is set to be killed off and Ossining residents are not happy about it.

Archie Comics, announced that Archie Andrews, the freckly, lovelorn comic book star since the 1940s, is going to die in an upcoming issue of the Life With Archie series, which shows Archie's life as an adult.

"Archie dies as he lived -- heroically, and helping a dear friend," said Jon Goldwater, Archie Comics publisher/co-chief executive officer. "In the flash forward 'Life With Archie' storyline, this seemed like a truly fitting way to conclude Archie's story. We're very proud of the story and of its genesis, right here in our office in Mamaroneck, where we've been situated for decades. This is, without a doubt, the biggest Archie story ever."

Response from Ossining residents was surprise at the decision to kill off the popular character.

"He's been around for 43 years," John Giorlamo said. "It's time."

"This is not a good thing," Rafael Cestero said. "Poor Ossining."

Legislator Catherine Borgia took solace in knowing that Archie dies in a noble fashion.

"I always aspired to be a Veronica, but I was definitely a Betty," said Borgia, who read the comics growing up.

Kim Jeffrey said she was upset and unhappy by the news.

"He was my whole life when I was a child," Jeffrey said.

Jeffrey said she would not want her children to have to read about Archie's death.
