Ossining Mayor Speaks Out Against Redistricting

OSSINING, N.Y. – Bill Hanauer is trying to remind state representatives that Ossining is in Westchester and not Rockland.

The Village of Ossining Mayor sent the state’s legislative task force a letter opposing new proposed redistricting that would place the village and town of Ossining in the 38th Senate District along with Ramapo, Clarkstown and Orangetown in Rockland County. Hanauer said the new draft plan from the Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment, released in January, is “an outrage.”

“They’ve had hearings this week but none of them in Westchester County where their most egregious work is taking place,” Hanauer said. “So I’m spearheading the movement here to get the governor to veto this plan. I want this to be the first tweak on their plate.”

Hanauer said his biggest concern is that the plan puts Ossining into an area with little in common.

“These four communities do not have a commonality of interests,” Hanauer wrote in the letter. “As a result, we do not believe we will be equally represented.”

But Hanauer isn’t the only Ossining official speaking out against the plan. Ossining council person Peter Tripodi said he’s also fighting the proposal.

“All this does is help the incumbency rate of a few politicians in Albany,” Tripodi said Wednesday. “It’s just another clear example of Albany politicians trying to pass laws that benefit themselves and not the people of the state.”

Tripodi added that, if the new plan received approval, Ossining would lose representation.

“I also question the motives for the drawing of this district, which really falls in the hands of Senate Republicans,” Tripodi, a Republican, said. “But I think both parties are responsible for this mess.”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo stated recently that he would veto the redistricting plan. Tripodi said he’s already made plans to meet with Sen. David Carlucci (D-Rockland County) to discuss the matter.

“We’re going to sit and discuss this and a couple of other issues,” Tripodi said. “He offered to meet with me, which I thought was very gentleman-like and professional of him.”
