The Lions Club presented OVAC with the Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award at an awards dinner at the Briars restaurant in Briarcliff Manor on Jan. 22. Representatives said the Uplinger Award recognized OVAC’s "significant contributions" to the Mid-Hudson region. OVAC Captain Nick Franzoso accepted the plaque that comes with the award from Ossining Lions President Thomas Evans.
"For 55 years, OVAC has performed outstanding service to this community," representatives said. "It went from starting with an 11-year-old ambulance and responding to around 500 requests in its first year to today's fleet of four ambulances and over 3,500 calls in 2013 with 70 volunteers and other career professionals."
Several village and town officials attended the award ceremony. Ossining Mayor William Hanauer read a proclamation declaring that Thursday, January 23, was OVAC day in the village of Ossining. Similarly, County Legislator and Majority Leader Catherine Borgia read a proclamation declaring that Thursday, January 23th, was also OVAC day in Westchester County. Ossining Town Supervisor Sue Donnelly presented a plaque of appreciation.
The Robert J. Uplinger Distinguished Service Award was established in 1993 by the New York State and Bermuda Lions Foundation, Lions Club members said. Uplinger was a past international president and a member of the Syracuse Lions Club.
