Ossining Library Continues Series Honoring Cheever

OSSINING, N.Y. – The Ossining Public Library named its reading room after Ossining author John Cheever as part of a celebration of what would’ve been the late author’s 100th birthday this year.

But Library Program Coordinator Jim Trapasso says the local author deserved more. As a part of the celebration, the library is continuing the showing of films made based off of Cheever’s works. Next up is the 1979 film “The Sorrows of Gin” starring Sigourney Weaver adapted from Cheever’s 1953 short story in the New Yorker.

Trapasso said it was important to continue to highlight Cheever’s career.

“He’s a local author, but not only that he was a great local author well-known in his genre and well-known throughout the world,” Trapasso said. “We formed a committee to come up with a series of events because we all felt it was necessary to do as much as possible to celebrate such an important man in Ossining’s history.”

The free showing of “The Sorrows of Gin” starts at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Ossining Public Library’s Budarz Theatre. The months-long celebration culminates in a birthday celebration for Cheever May 27 and a closing reception in early-June. More listings of events celebrating Cheever are listed on the library’s website. Those looking for more information about the film series are asked to call the library at (914) 941-2416.
