OSSINING, N.Y. -- More than 150 people came out to Market Square in Ossining Friday to show they stand united.

The village was the setting for a Peace and Unity Vigil and Rally on Friday, which featured speakers from clergy and elected officials like Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-Ossining) and County Legislator Catherine Borgia (D-Ossining). People representing the Muslim community and the LGBT community also spoke.

"The rally was a great success," organizer Omar Herrara said. "I was really happy with the outpouring of support. It was really cold, but we all got together and raced through it. Ossining has a reputation and legacy of coming together no matter what divisions and differences we had and we proved that."

Herrera said he intended to not make the event against any particular group or politician.

"We really stuck to the theme of peace and unity," Herrera said.

At the end of the rally, Herrera invited two members of the Ossining Republican Party to the stage as part of a call to action.

"It was a very nice event," Herrera said. "It really represented what Ossining is about. It made me extremely proud to be an Ossining resident."

On Friday, in an interview with Daily Voice ,  Herrera described Ossining as a sanctuary city, though he said he meant it symbolically.

"Ossining is a safe and diverse place for everyone," Herrera said. "The municipality, school district, and business community have always served everyone to the best of their ability."

Herrera said he plans on hosting future events so the community can come together and be empowered.
