OSSINING, N.Y. -- The Ossining Boat & Canoe Club held another successful Donald “Hot Pie” Zerilla Memorial Scholarship brunch on Sunday, June 8.
Over 165 people were served at the 16th annual event despite the fact the building was missing stoves this year. Longtime OBCC members and “Hot Pie” chefs John Klapkowski and Andy Pointer creatively used the outdoor barbecue equipment to serve eggs Benedict, hash browns, pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage and more to brunch-goers.
Sunday’s brunch served Mayor Bill Hanauer and village Trustee Victoria Gearity, local historians, community leaders, OBCC preservation supporters, business owners and residents.
Said OBCC trustee Meaddows Ryan of the brunch, “Earlier this year, we were informed that we had to remove the beautiful vintage Garland ranges that were traditionally used for parties, weddings and the annual preparation of this brunch. To date the matter of our ability to prepare food in the building remains unresolved, which, as you can imagine, posed a real dilemma for the scholarship brunch. Still, Johnny K (Klapkowski), Andy Pointer and their fantastic and hardworking volunteer crew were determined to continue the club’s commitment to the legacy of Donald Zerilla, and everyone at OBCC is incredibly thankful for the extraordinary job.”
The Donald “Hot Pie” Zerilla Breakfast assists the Zerilla Memorial Scholarship Fund, which helps Ossining High School students with college tuition.
