OSSINING, N.Y. – Ossining was expected to become a “Purple Heart Town” on Tuesday when the Ossining Town Board was to pass a resolution to recognize the community’s veterans.

Ossining is home to nearly 800 men and women who served in the U.S. military, according to the town.

“While we owe so much, including our freedom, to all of the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces, we have a special place in our hearts for those who have been wounded or who have made the ultimate sacrifice of their lives for this great country of ours,” Town Supervisor Sue Donnelly said in a statement.  “We appreciate all those in active service, along with our veterans, and we’re glad to be able to honor them in this way.”

The idea was introduced to the town by Council Member Peter Tripodi after being acquainted with Eugene Lang, junior vice commander of The Military Order of the Purple Heart New York Chapter 21, according to the town.

Nearby Cortlandt was the first town in New York to declare itself a Purple Heart Town in April and, in May, Westchester became the third county in the state to become a Purple Heart County.

Any recipient of, or any person eligible for a Purple Heart is encouraged to visit the website www.purpleheart.org, or contact the Town Supervisor’s Office for information on New York State’s Chapter 21.
