Omar Herrera Enters Race For Ossining Village Trustee

OSSINING, N.Y. -- Omar Herrera is ready to begin a life of public service in Ossining.

The 24-year-old announced on Monday, Feb. 24, that he is running for village trustee on the Democratic ticket. Herrera is a lifelong Ossining resident who graduated from Ossining High School.

"I am proud to be an Ossining resident," Herrera said. "Community is a big part of the Ossining identity. Ossining is the best place to live in Westchester."

Herrera aims to make village government fiscally responsible and accountable to residents.

"I want to make Ossining better," Herrera said. "I want to make this a better place for the community."

Herrera, a professional event manager and publicist, is a graduate of Pace University, and serves as public relations and event director for the Greater Ossining Chamber of Commerce. Herrera is also community coordinator for County Legislator Catherine Borgia.

"Ossining is going through a lot of changes," Herrera said. "I want to get people involved and be a part of this vision for Ossining."

Herrera praised Ossining as a place where diversity shines and pointed to himself as an Ossining success story. Herrera's parents are Cuban and Nicaraguan and he gave his speech in both English and Spanish. His website, www.omarjherrera.com will be bi-lingual.

He thinks his youth can be used as an asset.

"Our generation is changing the world," Herrera said. "We need young people to step up and be leaders."

Herrera said he also looks forward to being a voice for the Hispanic and Latin American communities of Ossining.

"I want to use my influence to help make the community better," Herrera said.
