Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a guide dog school, announced the completion of the Lions/Guiding Eyes Vehicle Project Two-for-One Challenge in which Lions helped District 20-R1, which serves Northern Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties, to raise $300,000 to replace Guiding Eyes’ aging fleet of vehicles. Nine new vehicles have been purchased through their efforts, representatives said.

The Van Tassel Society led the fund-raising and in cooperation with Guiding Eyes, the Two-for-One Challenge engaged Lions throughout the tri-state area with its fundraising goal.

Local Lions raised funds through events, public outreach, and letter appeals to their members as well as foundations, individuals and corporate funders.

“Everything about Guiding Eyes is wonderful,” said Caryl DePalma, former District Governor of Lions District 20 R-1. “To see the faces of the students when they get a puppy is priceless. Guiding Eyes continually reaches beyond what they need to do. We look forward to many more years of involvement and working with them on future grants.”

Representatives said transportation is essential to fulfilling Guiding Eyes for the Blind’s mission. Volunteers and support staff also rely upon the vehicles to assist the school with its programs and services.

“Guiding Eyes is extremely fortunate to have the generous support of Lions Clubs from throughout the metropolitan New York region and beyond,” said Sue Dishart, Guiding Eyes’ Vice President of Marketing and Development. “Lions Clubs’ donations have been instrumental in many of our achievements. We would like to thank these dedicated Lions on behalf of all the blind men and women who have been matched with Guiding Eyes dogs.”
