How Ossining Board and Council Work

OSSINING, N.Y. – They say you can't fight city hall, but in the halls of Ossining you have the right to be heard. The Daily Ossining is beginning a series called “How Your Town/Village Works” to help explain what goes on at Ossining Village Hall and what you need to know. Today we look at the village board of trustees and the town council. Tuesday we will look at the planning boards for the village and town, and Wednesday we will look at the zoning boards.

The village board of trustees and town council both meet twice per month on Tuesdays, with the village board meeting first and third Tuesdays and the town council meeting second and fourth Tuesdays.

The village board consists of the mayor and four trustees who are elected for two-year, staggered terms.

The town council consists of the supervisor, who is elected for a two-year term, and four elected council members who are elected for staggered four-year terms.

Agendas for both the village and town are generally posted online on the village and town websites the Friday afternoon prior to a Tuesday meeting.

If someone has a question on the agenda prior to a meeting, they can call the village manager's office if it is a village agenda, at 914-941-3554, or the town supervisor's office if it is a town agenda, at 914-762-6001.

Public comment is allowed during meetings at the beginning of the meeting, during which residents or organizations can make announcements, in the middle of the meeting, during which residents can discuss any item on the agenda, and at the end of the meeting when residents can discuss anything, whether it is on the agenda or not.

Minutes of meetings that include a record of resolutions and decisions made, are posted online, or if the meeting is very old, can be accessed by contacting the village or town clerk. Minutes are generally approved about two weeks after a meeting, and then posted online.
