Dutchess Driver In Car Hit By Train In Hyde Park ID'd

HYDE PARK, N.Y. – State police have released new information on the Amtrak train collision with a car in Hyde Park on Friday morning.

The front of this car was demolished when it was struck Friday by an Amtrak train in Hyde Park. The two people inside had escaped safely and no one on the train was injured.

All that remains of a car hit by a train in Hyde Park Friday is a twisted heap of metal. Two people inside were able to escape safely before the train hit. Police are investigating the cause of the incident. No one one the train was hurt.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the low-riding sedan was driving parallel to the train tracks, off of the roadway.

The vehicle which was traveling along the western most track, moved to avoid a large rock that was along the track.

The Acura, operated by Sean Pesano, 39 of LaGrange, became stuck preventing the vehicle from moving, state police said.

As the occupants of the vehicle attempted to free the vehicle from the tracks, the southbound Amtrak train was unable to avoid striking the unoccupied vehicle.

State Police issued Pesano a traffic ticket for aggravated unlicensed operation.

The investigation has been turned over the Amtrak Police Department.

According to the Fairview Fire District, the collision occurred around 9:30 a.m. near the town’s River Point Road.

None of the 178 passengers or four crew members aboard the train were injured, according to Fairview Chief Christopher Maeder.

River Point Road crosses the railroad tracks just before the Hyde Park Marina.

Police and emergency crews responding to the scene included Fairview and Mobile Life Support Service, the state police, as well as the town’s and the MTA’s police.

The train was traveling from Albany to Penn Station at the time of the accident.
