More than 13,000 organizations are planning One Billion Rising events on or around Feb. 14 in nearly all 50 states, and in 177 countries around the world. The events are timed to celebrate the 15th anniversary of V-Day (www.vday.org), the global movement started by Eve Ensler, the creator of the award-winning play "The Vagina Monologues."

“Women are the majority of the population and it's time that women are valued and no longer thought to be expendable,” said Hudson River Rising co-producer Elyssa Feldman Most. “Every day there's another story about a girl or a woman who has been killed or has been terribly violated. It's an issue whose time has really come and it needs to be addressed.”

The initial event will be a dance party on Feb. 9 at The Purple Crayon, located at 52 Main St. in Hastings-on-Hudson. The dance party will benefit Hope's Door (www.hopesdoorny.org), a non-profit women's shelter that works to end domestic violence in Westchester County. Beginning at 8 p.m., the dance will feature a DJ as well as a charity raffle and an auction.

Then, on Feb. 14, Hudson River Rising is creating a moving-dance celebration through Tarrytown in conjunction with One Billion Rising. People will gather between 3:30 and 3:45 p.m. at two yet-to-be-determined locations on Broadway, where dance captains will lead everyone in simple movements and then bring the groups together, converging on Main Street. “It's really about getting people together and uniting,” says Most. “Mayor [Drew Fixell of Tarrytown] is going to proclaim the day One Billion Rising day.”

Most and her co-producer, Jane Dubin, call on the community to join with millions of people around the world to rise up and dance to end the violence against women and girls. Tickets for the Feb. 9 dance party start at $75 and are available online at  www.HudsonRiverRising.Eventbrite.com. The Feb. 14 event is free and is open to men, women and children of all ages.
