Con Edison crews began work earlier this month to repair several power lines damaged during the storm and the subsequent nor’easter. In order to restore services faster when Hurricane Sandy hit the area last month, Con Edison representatives previously said crews made emergency repairs to areas across Westchester County. Those repairs were temporary and would not be enough to withstand further damage during the winter, Con Edison officials said previously.
Briarcliff Village Manager Philip Zegarelli recently reminded residents temporary power outages could continue into January.
“They've told us there is a lot of work that needs to be done and my thought is, if the weather permits, then come in and do it now while you can,” Zegarelli said. “As far as it lasting into January, you have the holidays coming up and you could get some rough weather and I’m told that there are a lot of projects that they would like to do so it could last that long.”
Zegarelli said he has met with Con Edison representatives each Monday since November to discuss updates on the repair work.
“We've gotten regular updates and what they told me is that the work might go on longer than originally anticipated but I wouldn't worry about it because these things need to be done,” he said. “Most of the work they were doing is done but there are packages that could last into January.”
The permanent repairs to Ossining should take about a week to complete, but Con Edison officials said recently that work in Briarcliff Manor could affect some Ossining residents and cause minor power outages not lasting longer than a few hours.
“We have been informed by Con Edison that they will be doing a permanent repair to a main feed for Ossining,” said Christina Papes, Village of Ossining assistant village manager. “These repairs are going to take a week to complete. Homes may experience some outages.”
Con Edison representatives previously said the permanent repairs would be necessary to minimize power outages during the winter.
"Following Hurricane Sandy, we made repairs to get customers back in service but we still have work to do in Westchester County to harden our system and restore it to its pre-Sandy condition," said Allan Drury, Con Edison spokesperson. "This work began after the restoration was complete and will continue for a number of weeks."
