The work will be done along Spring Street (near Village Hall) to Warburton Avenue, and along Warburton from Spring to Main Street, then up West Main and Main Street to Broadway. There will be reduced on-street parking at times while the work is being performed.
"It is going to be tough for business in the store but it has to be done I guess," said Isaac Garson, who owns Slices Pizza on Main Street. "We are supposed to get new gas lines, which is better. But the main thing is that the gas supply is safe."
Con Edison's plan is to install 1,250 feet of pipe in stages at seven locations, which will require roadway opening and service connection in a limited area at a time. The work will include sidewalk repair to those sections which are opened for service connections to approximately 60 customers. The work will take approximately three to four months to complete.
According to village officials, a Con Edison survey and inspection of the infrastructure and gas lines of the system which dates back to the late 1880s and early 1990s, showed that the work had to be done.
The project includes upgrading the existing low pressure gas line to a medium pressure line. This will enable businesses and residences to consider conversion to gas as their energy source.
Villagers are already experiencing some parking and traffic problems this spring and into the summer as an 18-month long project to repair the Warburton Avenue Bridge -- just south of the gas line repair -- continues. The northbound lane of the two-lane bridge arterial has been closed for the last several weeks forcing traffic to detour.
The road opening trench work will be done during normal business hours. However, some service connections will be off-hours.
Clockwork Records owner Michael James will have access to his Spring Street storefront somewhat hampered during the repairs.
"Although I'm wondering how this will effect my business, I am also a resident and father, so if gas lines are overdue in needing to be replaced, I say the sooner the better," James said. "Inconvenience is not as important as safety."
The Hastings-on-Hudson Police Department will play a critical role in the project as relates to public safety, traffic control and public notification.
