OSSINING, N.Y. The cheers of Ossining High School students could be heard from a neighboring block during the school's homecoming pep rally on Friday.
"Words don't explain it. You have to hear it yourself," said Junior Edward Aryee as he emerged from the school gymnasium after the pep rally. "Everyone's so loud and then the performances by the Diamond Steppers and the Drumline Everything's just amazing."
The pep rally came after a week of showing school pride by dressing up and decorating hallways according to class themes.
Student Council advisor Emerly Martinez started off the pep rally by having a contest to see which class could cheer the loudest.
"Let's hear it freshmen!" he said, eliciting cheers and hoots from freshmen who were seated on bleachers in one quadrant of gym.
All four classes cheered with spirit, by the junior class won for cheering the loudest.
"It was so much fun like usual," said Stephanie Andoy, the junior class president. "It's funny because the freshmen this year are so quiet. My year it was so loud."
The class cheering was followed by the crowning of the each class's homecoming couple, who were elected by student votes.
Freshmen Nick Balcomb and Annelyse Lopez were crowned Baron and Baroness; Sophomores Andres Rodriguez and Katie Rink were crowned Lord and Lady; Juniors Arturo Barrios and Tezira Byabusha were crowned Duke and Dutchess; Seniors Chris Collins-McNeil and Yessenia Montero were crowned Prince and Princess; and seniors Nick Rodwell and Amelia Clements were crowned King and Queen.
After the Homecoming couples were given their sashes and crowns, the Diamond Steppers step dancers performed a routine, followed by the presentation of varsity football players and a performance by OHS cheerleaders.
"On this side show your Ossining pride! We are Ossining!" cheered the cheerleaders.
"It was really exciting. We had to practice so hard this week," said cheerleader Cheyenne Ridenhour, a sophomore. "I was really nervous but I kept a smile on my face and I did good."
Junior Faisal Hirji said he always enjoys the atmosphere during Homecoming.
"It's very enjoyable to take some time off class to get hyped up," he said.
The homecoming week was to conclude on Friday with an Ossining vs. Horace Greeley High School football game at 7 p.m.
