Bicyclist Struck, Killed In Patterson By Impaired Carmel Driver, Cops Say

PUTNAM COUNTY, N.Y. -- A bicyclist was struck and killed by a driver who was allegedly impaired by drugs on Fair Street in Patterson on Tuesday, according to officials.

Ray Vanzo, 47, of Carmel allegedly drove his vehicle off the road at approximately 11:45 a.m., and struck Alan D. Taylor, 62, of Southeast, police said. 

Responders found Taylor unresponsive at the scene. CPR was administered before he was taken to Putnam Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead, police said. 

A responding deputy sheriff who is trained as a Drug Recognition Expert determined Vanzo was allegedly impaired by drugs at the time of the accident, police said. 

Vanzo complained of not feeling well and was taken to an area hospital where he was arraigned on charges of driving while ability impaired by drugs. Bail was set at $50,000 and additional charges could be pending, police said.
