WESTCHESTER, N.Y. While she enjoyed the fireworks, picnics and celebrating with family, 9-year-old Irvington resident Brynne Norquist didnt forget what the Fourth of July really means.
Its not about having fun, its so special how the people won the war for us, Brynne said Wednesday evening. Its about how America did it and the people who served our country. Plus its Americas birthday.
For 9-year-old Jenesse Bell of Yonkers, Fourth of July also means you get to show pride in America.
Its when you get to wear red, white and blue and you get to see fireworks, Jenesse said.
Irvingtons Ben Kasoff, 6, thinks it might be about something else.
Its the start of a new year, Ben said. Right? Is that it? Oh its Independence Day.
Thousands of Westchester residents flew their American flags, wore their countrys colors and watched the fireworks light up the sky Wednesday night at Dobbs Ferrys Waterfront Park, Irvingtons Matthiessen Park and in Sleepy Hollow. Several villages and towns also celebrated with parades during the daytime and food, games, picnics and spent time with family in the park through the evening.
Its about celebrating our independence and freedom but its really nice to spend time with family too. We also wanted to make sure Kaylie got to see some fireworks, said Lisa Jean of Mount Vernon after Kaylie, 2, chimed in.
Im eating food and Im having fun, Kaylie said.
