Ossining Woman Calm Before Storm

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – For Doris Gomez, the threat of Hurricane Irene hitting the Westchester County area this weekend is not a very big deal. It's not exactly because she is fearless, but more because she has been through worse.

"I'm originally from Costa Rica and I've been through worse hurricanes there, so I know what to expect and I'm not too worried about it," Gomez said.

The Ossining resident is a babysitter for two children in Pleasantville and was enjoying her Friday afternoon with the children at the Pleasantville Village Pool. After spending the afternoon at the pool, Gomez said she planned to prepare for the storm in a minimalist way.

"Just because my friends are pushing me so badly to prepare, I guess I'm going to go out tonight and pick up some basic stuff just to have in the house, but nothing too drastic," Gomez said.

Many Pleasantville residents enjoyed a sunny day at the village pool on Friday before the stormy weekend keeps them cooped up inside. Yet while people, such as Gomez, are not too worried about the storms to come, Pleasantville Village Departments have been hard at work.

Pleasantville Police Chief Richard Love has been in contact with the village's department of public works to prep areas of the village for the high winds and storms. The department spent much of the day Friday cutting branches along telephone poles and wires, and inspecting the secureness of traffic lights and flag poles.

"We want to mitigate anything that can cause damage and possibly harm someone in a storm of this magnitude," Love said.
