OSSINING, N.Y. Many Ossining teens are back in their classrooms this month, but Ossining officials are praising the projects they completed over the summer.
Hundreds of students from around the community participated in music, arts and educational programs throughout the summer sponsored by The Ossining Public Library, Ossining Parks and Recreation Department, Brieant Community Center and Ossining Communities That Care. From painting murals to joining choirs and taking field trips with village officials, students kept themselves busy and helping the community.
This is an extraordinary community that is able to provide these programs, said Ossining Village Mayor William Hanauer this week. Hanauer recently joined dozens of students on a trip to the Museum of Natural History in New York City. The opportunity is here for kids to involve themselves in activities they would not ordinarily know about. When you have things like that, that are inspirational, you have kids who are less interested in doing things that will do them damage. It was great to be a part of it.
The Brieant Center hosted a music and nutrition camp. While officials were uncertain at the beginning of the program, they said it blossomed into a popular choir and they plan to perform in Ossining at upcoming fall and holiday public events.
Dozens of young adults also joined fine arts instructors Ron Whitehead and Cedric Lucas to paint two new murals at the Ossining Public Library last month.
As an artist, it was an honor to be part of this mural project, Whitehead said in a press release. The young artists were really inspiring and made me want to go home and do more art myself.
The program also provided an opportunity for students to do something for Ossining, said Alice Joselow, Ossining Communities That Care co-chair.
This is a very nice addition to the library, Joselow said. This opportunity gave them a safe place to be and it gave them an exciting activity over the summer that also helped out the community. Thats what this is all about.
