SOMERS, N.Y. – Nearly two years ago, Ossining resident and Kennedy Catholic High School senior Anthony Torchia faced the very real possibility that he would never walk again. Sunday, he not only walked, but did it to make sure others could someday receive the same care that he did.

After spending 14 days in intensive care at Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla following an ATV accident in June 2011, Torchia has made a near full recovery. But instead of thanking his lucky stars, Torchia is giving back and has helped raise more than $7,500 for the children’s hospital after organizing a group to walk in last Sunday’s “Go the Distance Walk” which benefits the region’s most critically ill and injured kids at the children’s hospital.

“It’s been absolutely awesome to see how much people care,” Torchia said. “We had set a goal of about $5,000 but more and more people wanted to donate. It’s been incredible.”

Through blood drives, other fundraisers and last year’s walk, Torchia has helped raise more than $18,000 for the children’s hospital.

“It’s a great hospital and they do so much for the kids in this community, myself included,” Torchia said. “Most of the people who do the walk have known someone who has had to go to the hospital. It’s been really great to see so many people come out and give back to the hospital that helped them. And it’s been awesome to see how many people have donated.”

To learn more about the children’s hospital and ways to donate to the hospital’s programs, residents are asked to visit the Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital website .
