Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity joined Opie and her husband, Jay Opie, in celebration, presenting a proclamation declaring Jan. 24 as Ernestine M. Opie Day in the Village of Ossining.
An avid gardener for many years, Opie had cultivated an expansive, impressive garden and has spent much of her life helping others.
She settled in Ossining at the age of 9 and stayed to raise her family.
The Opies, who have been married for more than 50 years, are members of the First Baptist Church of Ossining.
