OSSINING, N.Y. – Although she has crafted special effects for dozens of TV shows and movies, 29-year-old Ossining native Meagan Hester will be in front of the camera for SyFy’s reality competition “Face Off.”
Hester will be one of the contestants featured in the fourth season of the unscripted series, which airs at 9 p.m. Jan. 15 on the SyFy Channel. The season will introduce a group of special effects makeup artists who will meet face-to-face in Los Angeles to compete in a series of “eye-popping challenges,” according to a press release from the show.
Before joining the show, Hester worked on other TV shows with Nickelodeon, VH1, MTV, Showtime and Music Choice. She most recently did special effects for the web series "Funny or Die," and for Comedy Central skits.
Although she makes her living by doing special effects in New York City and at her studio, G&H FX, Hester said her time in Ossining helped to prepare her for her dream job.
“Growing up in Ossining, I never knew there was an area like FX makeup, or that I could even have the ability to do work of that caliber,” Hester said in an emailed interview with The Ossining Daily Voice . “I think coming from a suburban town like Ossining has a lasting impression. You will notice my slang on the show, that stems from Ossining.”
G&H FX has a studio in White Plains, where Hester said she spent a lot of time learning her craft of movie special effects and making monsters. But she has also recently dedicated her time to supporting cancer survivors.
“Something that G&H FX would love to be a part of is giving back, so we are developing a foundation for prosthetics,” she said. “But, of course, this is in a very early stage. As far as my daily career, I am a full-time makeup artist in NYC. I mainly do beauty for television, editorial and commercials. As far as FX, I would love to be a part of a TV series in NY that uses FX daily.”
With filming under way on "Face Off," Hester said people will be entertained by the show.
“The competition is high-impact, fun, crazy and very challenging,” she said. “We are under unrealistic time deadlines, so the products that we crank out surprise all of us. You will see a lot during the season (that) each of us has something we struggle with. I’m very proud of being a part of Season 4 and thankful SyFy believed in me.”
