OSSINING, N.Y. Unlike other races, the Ossining MATTERS 5K Run/Walk is not about who can finish with the fastest time. It is about a continuing effort to help the Ossining School District.
The Ossining MATTERS Education Foundation will host its 10th annual 5K at 9 a.m. Saturday along the historic Croton Aqueduct. The spring concert and the 5K are the foundation's two biggest fundraisers each year. In nearly 10 years, it has helped raise more than $550,000 to support for the Ossining School District, board President Elisabeth Gilbert said.
Its a great way to start off the school year by showing support for our childrens education, Gilbert said Tuesday. We think its a really special time to come together as a community and think about our students in Ossining and all of the ways that we can enrich their education.
Ossining MATTERS provided funding and grant assistance for the Ossining Summer Environmental Academy this year and has previously helped fund the Summer Science Program, the Wigwam and Robotics/Engineering Club and dozens of other projects at the school district through more than 140 grants.
Its not part of the school budget so its a huge boost for our district when we can provide some programs, Gilbert said.
The event is a major contributor for educational programs at the district, Director Amy Seiden said in an email.
Our success depends on the involvement of the community, local merchants and various corporations, Seiden wrote. This year, the foundation awarded the district over $82,000 toward grants affecting all ages, from prekindergarten through high school.
A kids festival will be held for the youngest runners and walkers after the run, and awards will be presented in all age categories. Checkin for all participants will take place from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. at the Ossining Recreation Center.
