OSSINING, N.Y. -- The United Way of Northern Westchester has announced its 2012-13 Local Presence Program grant recipients, including one in Ossining. Grants totaling more than $5,000 were awarded following the recommendations of United Way Local Presence Committee Members Marcel Hegglin (Chair), Nancy Gould and Susan Tansey.
These grants awarded by the program help pay for local community-based human and health service organizations that do not currently receive United Way money. Organizations that receive money share with United Way the fundamental belief that education, income, and health are essential for a better life.
This year's recipients were: Charles L. Brieant Community Center in Ossining; SPARC, Inc; The Mental Health Association of Westchester – Mount Kisco Clinic; and Westchester Exceptional Children’s School.
Founded in 2009, the Charles L. Brieant Community Center provides services beneficial to youth in the greater Ossining area and for at-risk youth in Westchester County through partnerships with the Greater Ossining School District. This year’s local presence grant will support its new “Peer Mediation Program” at Ossining High School during the 2013-2014 school year, which teaches students how to resolve conflicts among their peers without turning to violence.
