He says it’s the people behind the scenes—like the volunteers who visit the Food Bank of Westchester or ShopRite to pick up food, for example—who should be recognized.
“They are the unseen and unsung heroes,” said the Briarcliff Manor resident.
The Ossining Food Pantry serves approximately 200 families a week. In addition to dropping off food for needy locals at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Ossining, volunteers make special deliveries as well. One example is the Ossining Children's Center, where struggling parents can grab a bag of food while picking up their kids. The organization even does drop-offs to those who can’t leave the house.
“If you request food, you’re going to get it within 24 hours. The greatest reward you can receive is the ability to give back to your community,” Englehardt added.
These packages are especially important during the holiday season. On Thursday, Dec. 1, Englehardt said 85 people came to pick up food. Residents anxious about holiday shopping can also rest easy knowing St. Teresa’s Church and the Ossining Food Pantry will partner to host a toy distribution on Dec. 22.
Aside from his work with the non-profit organization, Englehardt is a member of the Briarcliff Manor Volunteer Fire Department, for which he is on-call every sixth night of the week. He said since he is around the community so much as a local resident, it is within his civic duty to lend a hand.
