Ossining Farmers' Market Opens Saturday

OSSINING, N.Y. – Two decades ago, Community Markets’ Miriam Haas put together Ossining’s first Farmers' Market.

The Ossining Farmers' Market is set to open for the 21st season at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the corner of Spring and Main streets. Since its inception in Ossining, Community Markets has helped open 15 other farmers' markets in the Westchester area. Haas credits the market’s success in Ossining paving the way for other area markets.

“Since 1991, when we started our first farmers' market in Ossining, New York, the goal has always been to connect people directly with farmers,” Haas said in a press release. “Even with our artisanal producers, we make sure that they source their ingredients from area farms. We’re doing our job when we’re able to help keep farms and local businesses healthy.”

The success alis so attributed to “the overwhelmingly positive response” from Ossining residents, said Frankie Rowland, marketing director at Community Markets.

“We have been well-received for quite a while in the Village of Ossining,” Rowland said. “The most important thing is to help support local agriculture and processors and provide them with that face-to-face interaction with the consumer. The benefit is that people get to know where their food comes from and greater details where it’s grown.”

Rowland added Community Markets ensures all of the food is fresh.

“They are out there picking today and that’s the food they will bring on Saturday,” Rowland said. “All of the food will be picked within 48 hours of purchase. That, combined with the variety, gives people an opportunity to taste and try different things that are fresh that they couldn't otherwise get anywhere else.”

More than a dozen vendors from the tri-state area are returning this year, including Meredith’s Bread, Bread Alone, Feather Ridge Farm, Amazing Real Live/Chaseholm Creamery, R & G Produce, Bombay Emerald Chutney Company, Locust Grove Fruit Farm, Tierra Farm, Pura-Vida Fisheries, Mead Orchards, The Pastures, Chiboust, and Pickle Licious. The market also is welcoming new vendors this year like Hudson River Apiaries, Eden Farm Greenhouses and Mortgage Apple Cakes. The Ossining Farmers' Market is from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Saturday through Dec. 15.
