YONKERS, N.Y. – Yonkers native Christian Federico, who died suddenly after a full life as a standout student/athlete at Ossining High School, will be honored by friends and family with the Fourth Annual Christian Federico Memorial Softball Tournament at Redmond Field in Yonkers on July 27.
A star football and baseball player at Ossining High, Federico graduated in 2008 and went on to attend the University of Maryland, where he died while jogging on April 30, 2010.
The softball event, which raises funds for a scholarship established in Federico's memory, will be held at Redmond Field on Cook Avenue in Yonkers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. His father, Lou Federico, who coached his son at Ossining, was a standout athlete at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers from 1967 to 1970 and worked for the city of Yonkers.
The event will feature a tournament, men’s and women’s games, a picnic and raffles that will offer prizes contributed by businesses throughout the county, including tickets to New York Yankees baseball games.
His mother, Luanne Federico, encouraged supporters to ask friends, family, employers, or favorite local businesses (nail salons, pizzerias, restaurants, delis ) if they would be willing to donate a gift certificate for the raffles.
"Many people have contacted us to ask how they can help us with this event and for that, we are very, very grateful," Luanne Federico said in a Facebook message.
Teams in co-ed and men's brackets may include up to 15 players. The fee is $500 per team, which includes a guarantee of three games and food and drinks.
Those interested in fielding a team for the event or in contributing to the fund-raising effort can call Vic Federico, Christian's uncle, at 914-830-0811 or log on to the “In Memory of Christian Federico.” Facebook page.
Contributions may also be sent to the fund at 2 Butler Place, Ossining, N.Y. 10562.
