YONKERS, N.Y. -- Layla Vazquez wants to help her fellow Puerto Ricans.

Vazquez, who was named Miss Puerto Rico Yonkers in 2010 when she was 16 has launched a GoFundMe page to raise money to purchase supplies for the people of Guyama, where her family lives.

As of Friday afternoon, $1375 has been raised by 34 people over eight days. Since the hurricane, Vazquez, a masters student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, has been unable to contact her family.

"This is a human necessity, this is human survival," Vazquez said.

Since the hurricane, Vazquez has been shopping for supplies at Wal-Mart and Shop Rite to send to Puerto Rico. She said people need items like canned food, baby formula, and soap.

Vazquez said her grandparents, who live in Guyama, survived the hurricane but are in dire need of help.

"My grandmother has a wound on her leg and there is no access to a hospital," Vazquez said.

Though she has been unable to reach anyone by phone, Vazquez has been keeping tabs on Guyama via social media.

"It's horrifying," Vazquez said. "It's necessary that the government steps in to help people."

Vazquez said she will bring the supplies to a warehouse on Long Island that will help get them delivered to Puerto Rico.
