Ossining's Supporting Role Fades As 'Mad Men' Airs Its Final Episode

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Well, "Mad Men" fans. This is it. The finale of the AMC show airs Sunday, but not without most likely showcasing, or at least referencing, various Westchester locales and landmarks.

Rye Playland and the Rye home of the Francis family got cameos two weeks ago in an episode where Sally Draper, played by Kiernan Shipka, is visited by old friend, Glen Bishop, creator Matthew Weiner's real-life son, Marten Weiner.

Cos Cob was also prominantly featured last week when Ad Exec Pete Campbell (played by Vincent Kartheiser) pleads for his wife, Trudy (Alison Brie in real life) to take him back.

Though the series was filmed in Los Angeles, it has, over the years, included numerous area references including, in the early seasons, locations in and around Ossining where the fictional Draper family live.

Many folks outside our area, in fact, only know of Ossining because it's where "Don Draper" lived. So confirmed Ossining Mayor Victoria Gearity who said a new resident recently told her just that about her Brooklyn friends.

"Thankfully most actual Ossining residents don't have quite the drama and turmoil that the Drapers experienced," said Gearity.

Specific mentions over the years have included the Ossining train station, Tarrytown, the Rockefeller estate/Kykuit, Brookside Elementary School in Ossining, Sing Sing, Carvel in Elmsford, and blink and you may miss it nods to New Rochelle, Buchanan and Larchmont.

However the story ends, County Executive Rob Astorino said Westchester is honored to forever be connected to the show. “While not shot on location, the depiction of, and reference to, many Westchester locales and historical moments was very well done. It reminds us that Westchester is a great place to live and visit.”

And if driving around Ossining isn't enough for conjuring up "Mad Men" memories, consider touring replicas of the show's sets at the Museum of Moving Image in Queens, on view through June 14 (see previous Daily Voice story here).
