Atiera Hopkins, who travels between her Mount Vernon home and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University in Tallahassee all year, will return to her home county to represent her hometown after being selected as a state finalist for the Miss New York USA Pageant, which is scheduled to be held in January.

Pageantry is nothing new to the 19-year-old Hopkins, who has placed fourth in the nation as the Miss Black Teen New York U.S. Ambassador. Hopkins also won the Cynthia Bailey “Miss Renaissance Pageant 2013” in Georgia. She has also represented Mount Vernon dozens of time as a teenager as she competed against the best in the state and country.

Hopkins has long been a fixture in the Mount Vernon community, where she still holds a membership at the Bowen Memorial Baptist Church under her the guidance of her godfather and pastor Rev. Hugh Farrish. During her summer break before heading back to Florida, she volunteered at Warburg and has been an active advocate of literacy through her Reading Inspires Others (R.I.O) Project.

A graduate of Mount Vernon High School, Hopkins’ mother said that Atiera could serve as a role model for the community as it continues rebuilding around a new administration.

“I (think) her achievements as a young teen would be a positive nod for Mount Vernon, especially our African American community, to empower, encourage and inspire other young women in our community to strive and persevere over any challenges or obstacles that may come before them,” she noted. “It doesn’t hurt that she is most definitely a product of the Mount Vernon school system and has grassroots here in the community.”
