Stamford Football Stuns New Canaan

STAMFORD, Conn. – Led by the running and passing of quarterback Bryan Boderick, Stamford stunned previously unbeaten New Canaan, 36-29, Saturday night at Boyle Stadium. It was Stamford’s first football victory over the Rams since 1971.

Boderick ran for two touchdowns and passed for three others. He finished the night with 14 completions in 23 attempts for 266 yards and one TD pass each to his brother, Barry, Jake Demetros and Nick Palumbo. The quarterback had touchdowns runs of 27 and nine yards.

“He does that every game,’’ Barry Boderick said. “He’s the best quarterback in the league.”

Big plays were plentiful for the Black Knights, and Bryan Boderick had a hand in several of them. The first came in the first quarter when Stamford drove 39 yards for the game-tying touchdown on a 27-yard run by Bryan Boderick. Three plays later, a huge hit by Shaquille Watkin caused a fumble, which Rodrigo Denapoli recovered. On the next play, Boderick hit a streaking Demetros for a 30-yard touchdown pass to put Stamford ahead.

Leading 21-14 at halftime, the Black Knights came out and scored on their opening drive of the third quarter. First Chandler Foster connected on a 29-yard pass to Demetros on a fake punt to keep the drive alive. Then Boderick hit Palumbo on a 15-yard touchdown pass and Denapoli ran for the two-point conversion to stake Stamford to a 29-14 lead.

New Canaan struck back, scoring on the second play of the fourth period to make it 29-22. After Boderick directed Stamford on a 66-yard march midway through the quarter, consuming nearly five minutes, he scored on a 9-yard run on fourth-and-one to give Stamford a commanding 36-22 lead with 3:33 left.

New Canaan scored its final touchdown with five seconds left, and Stamford recovered the onsides kick to record one of the most significant wins in team history.

“Our kids were extremely motivated,’’ Stamford coach Bryan Hocter said. “I had a good feeling about this game all week. As the season goes on, we seem to get better. The kids seem to find their niche on the team and the gel. I saw that this week. I liked a lot of the things we were doing offensively and defensively.”

After early season losses to Norwalk and Ridgefield, Stamford has reeled off four straight victories with games remaining against Brien McMahon and Westhill. The Black Knights may have catapulted themselves back into state playoff contention. At the very least, they showed what they are capable of while sending shock waves through the league.

“We should’ve been playing like this all year,’’ Barry Boderick said. “Now we just got to keep going and win against McMahon next week.”
